My name is Samantha Durocher. I am currently (2020) a Junior attending City High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan. “Encouraging Students to Stay in Instrumental Music Programs” is my Girl Scout Gold Award project, the highest award a Girl Scout can receive. I started this project in the summer of 2019 and completed it February of 2021.
My project, titled “Encouraging Students to Stay in Instrumental Music Programs,” stemmed from my love of music. I am very passionate about getting a wider range of minors involved in musical programs. While there has been a slight rise of involvement with musical instruments from ages spanning from 5 all the way to 17 since 1985 (25% to 31%), the numbers are still lower than hoped for. (“Gallup Organization Reveals Findings of "American Attitudes Toward Making Music" Survey”, 2003) My goal upon the completion of this project is to get more students involved in music programs at their school, as well as continuing with them for a substantial amount of time.
This project includes various materials that I have created in order to achieve my goal. These materials are this website, an easy on-the-go pamphlet with quick facts and more, and a video showcasing different instruments. (Both the pamphlet and video can be accessed from this website.) I also created a program at my school that will encourage younger students to continue their music education. This entails older kids who have chosen to stay in these programs to talk to the younger population about the benefits of music, why it is a fun choice, why they personally like it, etc. (You can see the outline for this program underneath the Original Resources page.) My website and video are tools that will help persuade these students to choose music classes.
